How do I Remotely Program a Panasonic KX-TDE100 Phone System?

Customers will often ask, what is the best way to make programming changes to my Panasonic Phone System remotely? Remote programming can save a company a good deal of money, rather than having to pay a technician to come on site to make a change. So what is the best way to remotely program a Panasonic KX-NCP500 or a Panasonic KX-TDE200 System?

A Panasonic KX-TDE and a Panasonic KX-NCP Phone System both have a built in LAN port on the processor. This LAN port will allow you to connect your phone system to your network. Once this is in place, your technician or IT manager can assign the system an IP Address on the LAN. From there, he can connect a VPN router to the LAN with access to your Panasonic Phone System. The technician must also have VPN client software and Panasonic PCMC or Panasonic Programming Software loaded onto their laptop. From there, the technician can access the phone system through a high speed internet connection, rather than an analog modem, as was usually the case in the past.

There are many different models of VPN Routers that you can purchase for remote programming.

One model that we often use is Netgear FVG318 VPN Router. This router has 8 VPN Tunnels, 19 MB throughput, and it can also be used to give your client wireless internet access in replacement of a separate wireless router. Compatible VPN client software would be Netgear VPNG01L single user license.

Keep in mind that if you also need to access the voicemail for remote programming, the Panasonic KX-TVA50 Voicemail System requires the addition of a LAN Card KX-TVA594.

Your technician would also connect the voicemail to the network and assign it a second IP address. Panasonic KX-TVA200 has a built in LAN port and does not require any other equipment to connect to the LAN.

You may want to work closely with an IT manager in order to properly connect your Panasonic IP Phone System to your IT infrastructure.

Configuring a Panasonic KX-TDE200

We had a recent issue that arose when configuring a TDE200 Phone System.
Panasonic KX-TDE200 has 11 slots for expansion; however, you must be aware of the maximum amount of extension cards and line cards that you can add to the cabinet.

Our customer was trying to use 2 slots for line cards, and 9 slots for extension cards.

When the last extension card was added to the system, we received an error message: Error 90 Over Card Limitation.

Initially we believed that it could be an issue with the power supply; however, we were well below the maximum amount on the Large Power Supply (KX-TDA0103).
When we looked into it further, the maximum amount of extension cards that you can use on a Panasonic KX-TDE200 Telephone system is 8. You can use any combination of 8 cards, whether it be single line extensions or digital extensions. And you can only use a maximum of 8 of any of any one type of card as well.

If this error message comes up, you should look into your card count to fix the issue.

One other thing to keep in mind, if you have this error message on a KX-TDE200 phone system, you may not have an easy upgrade to a Panasonic KX-TDE600 phone system.

The TDE600 and TDE200 do not use all of the same cards. For example, there is a special card for POTS lines (KX-TDA6180), and for single line extension cards (KX-TDE6174, KX-TDA6175, KX-TDA6178). If you are using the cards that work on the TDE200 System, these cards will not work on TDE600 phone system. You must upgrade to the TDE600 cards. Also, the TDE600 has a 10 slot main cabinet, versus the TDE200 has an 11 slot cabinet. The TDE600 expansion cabinet KX-TDE620 has 11 slots, but also requires an expansion card KX-TDE6110.

So if you are close to the maximum configuration on a Panasonic TDE 200, it is best to propose a TDE600 instead.

How to Choose Which Wireless Headset will Work Best with your Panasonic Phone

Panasonic Phones are compatible with many types of wired and wireless phones. When using a wireless headset on a Panasonic Telephone, you must always include a handset lifter as well.

Two very popular Plantronics Headsets are the Plantronics CS50and the Plantronics CS55models. Many of our customers ask us what the difference is between the two headsets.

Some people like the Plantronics CS55 because they are used to it, and some people may be more comfortable using the Plantronics CS50 since they are accustomed to that headset.

Both products are current products on Plantronics and there are no plans to discontinue either headset.

So what are the differences and similarities between the two Plantronics Wireless Headsets?

They both look absolutely the same and have the same wearing styles except the charging base for the Plantronics CS55 is a little bit smaller. It is very hard to detect any difference.
The Plantronics CS55 has a blinking light on the charger to indicate whether you are on the phone or not, while that feature is not included on the Plantronics CS50
The batteries are also the same and interchangeable.
The Plantronics CS50 has battery talk time up to 8 hours. Plantronics CS55 has battery talk time up to 10 hours.
The Plantronics CS50 is 900MHz and the Plantronics CS55 is 1.9 GHz.

The average person in a call center is on the phone for no more than 4 hours per day.
According to the national average even dispatchers are on the phone 4 to 5 hours a day.
So the talk time is not relevant when making a decision on which headset to purchase.
900 MHz has a little better penetration which means that the Plantronics CS50 will have a little better range than Plantronics CS55.
This is why the battery talk time is a little longer on a Plantronics CS55.
900 MHz and 1.9 GHz both do not interfere with Computer WiFi Networks since those units run on 2.4 GHz frequency.

Some people are under the impression that 900MHz is not obsolete signal since it has been used far longer than 2.4 or 1.9 GHZ, however this is not the case. Some people also believe that 900 MHz is a weaker signal, however it is not much worse or better than 1.9GHz it is just a different method of sending a signal over air waves.

To avoid overcrowding of airways, manufacturers have come out with different frequencies to accommodate many different types of devices that may use radio waves. Most manufacturers encourage customers with multiple types of wireless devices to mix models of frequencies while using wireless headsets. This will help the users to avoid cross talk and interference between devices.

Always check with the manufacturer as some frequencies may not be used in the same environment.

The Plantronics CS50 and the Plantronics CS55 may be used in the same environment and Plantronics does encourage that you mix them when you have many users with wireless headsets.

Plantronics has several models of wireless headsets, and it is always best to check each model to see which will accommodate the user best.

New Panasonic DECT Phones and Devices to be Released in 2011

Panasonic DECT Wireless Phones

Panasonic has announced that there will be two new models of Panasonic DECT Wireless Phones available to distribution in January 2011.

The two new models are the Panasonic KX-WT125 and Panasonic KX-WT126. Both phones are compatible with the Panasonic DECT wireless cell stations. The difference between the two new models is that the KX-WT126 has the option to vibrate instead of ring tone. You can mix these Panasonic Wireless Phones with the current models of DECT phones, such as the KX-TD7685, KX-TD7695 and KX-TD7696 Phones. The newer models are larger in size than the current models, but with a smaller display and less talk time. However, when they are released they are supposed to be lower in price than the current models.

There will also be a new Repeater for the cell stations (KX-A405) that will be available in the spring. This repeater allows you to go 3 times as far as the normal range of a cell station (approx 150 ft from cell station currently = 450 ft with a repeater). The repeaters do not require cable runs.

Updated Panasonic Programming Software now Available on BTS Dealer

Panasonic has recently updated their Unified PC Maintenance Console or Panasonic Phone System Programming Software to v6.2.1.1. The latest release will now support Windows 7, 64-bit software as an operating system on your programming PC. The previous release supported Windows 7, 32-bit software, so the only major difference between the two versions is the support of 32-bit versus 64-bit. If you are not using Windows 7 or if you only use 32-bit software then there is no need to download the latest version. The only real obstacle in using the 64-bit version is that the TVA programming software has only been upgraded to support the 32-bit version. Panasonic does have plans to upgrade the TVA voicemail as well. There has not been a release date given yet, but you should expect to see it within the next few months.

The Unified PCMC or Unified PC Maintenance Console will allow you to program several Panasonic Phone Systems including the KX-TDA50, KX-TDA50G, KX-NCP500, KX-NCP1000, KX-TDA100, KX-TDA200, KX-TDA600, KX-TDE100, KX-TDE200, and KX-TDE600. The KX-TA824 system has a separate Programming Tool on the Panasonic website. That software is only compatible with Windows XP. The Unified PCMC is compatible with both Windows XP and Windows 7; however, there are no plans to allow compatibility with Windows Vista.

Panasonic KX-NT400 IP Phone’s Network Camera Connectivity and Enhanced Communications Options Showcased at CEDIA Expo 2010 in Atlanta

ATLANTA, GA (September 23, 2010) – Panasonic announced today that the KX-NT400 IP telephone received a 2010 Best Electronic Systems Technologies (BEST) Award from CEPro. CEPro is a leading trade magazine that covers the custom electronics business and recognizes innovations in technology. New Panasonic New Version of TVA Voicemail - December 2010 Release

Panasonic will be releasing a new version of the KX-TVA50 and KX-TVA200 voicemail systems in December of 2010. Version 3 will focus on improving the functionality of the voicemail for the end user. Older versions of TVA voicemail can be upgraded by Panasonic dealers through a software download provided by Panasonic.

Simplified listening will improve the way the Panasonic voicemail works when a user is listening to a message. Currently when you are listening to a voicemail and would like to skip to the next message without deleting the one that you are listening to, you have to press 1 then 2. In the new release you will be able to simply press 7 to skip ahead.

Caller ID Call Back feature will also be improved. Currently if you get a voicemail from someone and the call was transferred from the receptionist, and you select caller ID call back, the voicemail will call back the receptionist instead of the calling party. Going forward, it will call back the calling party as long as the caller ID information was received.

Another improvement to the voicemail functionality will be message status. Currently when you listen to a message, even for a few seconds, it automatically marks the message as old. If you are listening to your voicemail and receive another call and answer it, this can be an annoyance. Going forward, you have the option to mark the message as read after you listen to the message.

The KX-TVA50 and KX-TVA200 Panasonic Voicemail Systems are compatible with a variety of Panasonic Phone Systems.

New Panasonic Products and New Release Software - December 2010 Release

Panasonic will be releasing new software releases as well as new products this winter. You can expect a new release of KX-TDE, KX-NCP, KX-TDA50G, as well as Communications Assistant, KX-TVA50 and KX-TVA200 voicemail systems, and a new line of DECT wireless phones.

The latest features will all greatly benefit Panasonic Phone System users and installers.

KX-TDE/ NCP v 4.2 Software will allow up to 100 TDE and NCP systems to be networked together with up to 128 IP Phones per system. Many of the new features require the purchase of enhanced software and will improve the networking features of the phone systems. You may network up to 100 sites, but up to 8 sites can be truly networked together and share system resources.

Some of the new feature enhancements include the ability to use the following features in up to 8 networked sites:

3 Digit Dial- between 8 sites
Calling Name ID- see the name of the calling party from other sites (internal calls)
Absent Text Message- seen on your display
Blind transfer to voicemail
Automatic Call Back- set a call back when an extension is busy
Call Monitor/ Listen- Supervisors can listen in on calls, even at other networked sites
Multiple ICD Groups- Set up ICD groups for up to 8 sites
Network Paging- Page over any of the networked sites

Conference Calling will also be upgraded to allow up to 31 Listening members and up to 8 Party all speak. You can set up conference rooms for up to 8 rooms. There is also a new feature of Group Conference Call. You can set up a time in the system for a conference call and the system will call all members at the specified time either on their extension or on their cell phone. Communications Assistant will allow you to easily drop and drag members names into the group and choose between cell number or extension.

Panasonic is also announcing compatibility with a mobile twinning enhancement software through Mobisma. Mobisma software will allow mobile twinning to be a one number solution for Panasonic. It is a GUI interface for Smart Phones such as Blackberry, Symbian or Windows Mobile Compatible Devices. Coming soon they will have an app for iPhone and Droid as well. You can activate mobile twinning from your cell phone through this software. It also gives you one touch access to features such as log in/out of calling groups, access voicemail, intercom extensions, transfer back to the PBX, conference call, outbound dial through the PBX without showing your cell phone number, and much more. You can set presence settings that can be seen by other employees through Communications Assistant or through their display on their Panasonic phone.

KX-TDE100, KX-TDE200, KX-TDE600 as well as KX-NCP500 and KX-NCP1000 will all be compatible with the new features listed above as well as Mobisma Software.

Many customers want to take advantage of cost savings associated with using VoIP, but they do not know how it works or why it can save them money. When a customer asks for a VoIP phone system, we ask them why they want to use it, and usually it is because they think they will be able to make free long distance calls over the internet. So let’s take a look at the best reasons to upgrade to a VoIP compatible phone system, how it will help a customer save money, and which carriers to recommend.

Voice over IP is best utilized for used for 3 main reasons:

I want to upgrade to SIP trunks to save money on my phone bill.
I want to be able to use VoIP to connect a remote employee telephone extension to our phone system at a main location.
I want to be able to connect two or more locations to transfer phone calls and share telephone system resources.

VoIP can help save you money on your phone bill, but not because you will be able to make free long distance telephone calls. Many local and long distance carriers are now offering SIP trunks as a VoIP solution to homes and businesses. SIP trunks use your existing internet connection to provide you with telephone lines. This internet connection may either be one that you are currently using, or an upgraded high speed connection that the SIP carrier will also sell to you. The reason that these lines are cheaper than traditional telephone lines is that they are provided off of an internet connection. Since you already have a high speed connection for data transfer, they do not need to run a separate line for voice traffic, this in itself will save you money. Traditional telephone lines were always owned by AT&T or Verizon and your telephone carrier had to pay these companies a leasing fee to use their copper lines for transferring calls over the Public Switched Telephone Network. Since SIP trunks do not carry service over these lines, SIP carriers do not have to pay line usage fees and this is another reason why VoIP services are so much less expensive. SIP trunks are not subject to federal and state taxes as well as FCC charges. These are all big fees that can stack up each month and another big savings to SIP trunk customers.

Another important reason to upgrade to a VoIP capable phone system is the need to connect a remote employee telephone extension to your company’s main location. More and more businesses are allowing their employees to telecommute at least a few days per week, or to work from home while on maternity leave. You may also find that the right employee to fill an open position at your company may be located in another area of the country. Perhaps the owner of the company would like to be able to answer phone calls from home after hours or on the weekends. All of these are reasons why you may want to connect a remote employee extension. This can all be done at a relatively low expense through using VoIP. The remote employee needs a high speed internet connection, the proper onsite equipment and an IP telephone. He or she can work as if they are in the office. They can intercom extensions, access company voicemail, and even use the telephone lines of the phone system to make and receive calls. The connection between the office and the remote location is made through the internet.

The third reason that a company will decide to upgrade to VoIP is to connect two or more locations for the transferring of phone calls and sharing phone system resources. Many companies have multiple locations but would like their customers to reach the proper department no matter where they are located. You may decide to advertise one main phone number and have incoming calls routed to one operator. When a phone system is connected through VoIP you have the option to have that operator view extensions at your other sites and see if an employee is available to take a phone call. You also have the option to share one voicemail system. This will help to seamlessly integrate all sites and save you money on your phone system hardware. You can also transfer phone calls or intercom extensions between sites, all as if you were on the same phone system. This is a real cost savings associated with using VoIP. If you have one location in New York and another in Los Angeles, you will not have to pay long distance fees to reach an employee at the other site. Now it is simply done as an intercom call. You can also use the phone lines of the second location to make local calls. So now, when an employee in LA wants to reach a customer in New Jersey, they will use VoIP to connect to the NYC site, and make a local call. The savings on your long distance bill will add up very quickly.

So when a customer would like to upgrade to a VoIP compatible phone system, which one should they choose? And who is the best carrier to recommend? Panasonic has a number of VoIP compatible phone systems. You may choose from the KX-TDA50G, KX-NCP500, KX-NCP1000, KX-TDE100, KX-TDE200, or KX-TDE600 Hybrid IP phone systems. The difference between these systems is simply the size or the amount of lines and extensions that a company will use. The basic features of these systems are the same. There are many carriers that are compatible with a Panasonic IP Phone System, such as Broadvox or Verizon. Both companies have plans that will fit your company needs and budget.

I have an older Panasonic Phone System. Do I have the ability to reuse my phones on a new Panasonic Phone System?

Many companies have used Panasonic Telephone Systems for years without any issues. The systems are built to last and the quality of the phones are excellent. When customers would like to upgrade to a newer system to take advantage of features such as Unified Messaging or SIP Trunks, they often are discouraged by the price of replacing their entire phone system. Often times a customer will ask if they can reuse their existing phones on a new Panasonic Phone System. The answer is often yes.

Panasonic will allow you to use many models of their discontinued phones on a newer phone system.   There are two major distinctions between Panasonic phones, consumer phones and business telephones. Panasonic consumer phones may have the ability to access one to four lines and do not require a phone system to operate.   These phones can often be used as a single line telephone extension on a Panasonic Business Telephone System. Consumer phones are often cordless phones or corded phones that are used in a residence or a small business.

Panasonic Business Telephones come in several different models and are categorized by being either Analog Phones or Digital Phones. Analog phones use an older technology and the quality of the sound on the phones is not as clear as a digital phone. Analog phones are typically compatible with the older Panasonic Phone System and can be reused on a newer system. When used on a newer Panasonic PBX, they take 4 times the amount of power that a newer digital phone would take. This is an important factor when deciding whether or not to keep your old phones. You can significantly lower your phone bill by upgrading to newer phones.   If you are currently using an analog Panasonic phone, and it is not working, you can replace it with a newer model of analog phone without a compatibility issue. The analog Panasonic telephone models are the KX-T7000, KX-T7100, and KX-T7300. These models are all discontinued now. There is only one model that is still currently manufactured and for sale new, the KX-T7700 series phones such as the KX-T7731 phone. There is also a model of cordless analog Panasonic phones, the KX-TD7896 phone, which uses 2.4 GHz frequency. All of these phones may be reused with the latest Panasonic Phone Systems, but require a hybrid extension card such as the KX-TDA0170 or the KX-TDA5170 card, depending upon the system. Again there are special power requirements, so you may need a larger power supply when reusing these phones. Most often these phones are used on the current Panasonic Analog System, the KX-TA824 which is still manufactured.

Panasonic Digital Telephones were released with the KX-TD Phone Systems such as the KX-TD308, KX-TD816, KX-TD1232, and KX-TD500 phone system.   They are also compatible with the new lines of Panasonic Telephone Systems such as the KX-TDA50G, KX-TDA100, 200, or 600, KX-TDE100, 200, 600 and KX-NCP500, 1000.   The latest models of the digital phones are the KX-DT300 series phones such as the KX-DT343 24 button phone. Many customers still have the KX-T7600 series phone such as the KX-T7633. These phones are discontinued but still available in limited models.   If you are currently using a KX-T7600 series phone, you can simply upgrade to a DT300 series phone without a compatibility issue. The older models of digital phones are the KX-T7200 and KX-T7400 series phones. Popular models are the KX-T7453 and KX-T7433 phones. These phones will connect to a regular digital extension port, however just like the analog phones they use four times the amount of power that a newer series of digital phones will use. You may choose to use your KX-T7433 phones temporarily and upgrade them as you need to.

Any model of Panasonic phone will be a user friendly phone that you will be able to use for many years to come.

Product Announcement- End of Sale of KX-TDA100200 Platforms

Panasonic has just this week announced end of sale for the KX-TDA100 and the KX-TDA200 phone systems. The current product lines of Panasonic KX-TDE100/200/600 and the KX-NCP500 and NCP1000 IP Phone systems will replace the TDA line. They will also continue with the KX-TDA50G and the KX-TA824 telephone system.

Panasonic will now allow technicians who are TDA Certified to enroll for online training and certification on TDE for free.

End of sale for TDA is effective 8/31/10 or while supplies last.   However, new Panasonic TDE phone system bundles will be available.

There are many reasons why the Panasonic TDE systems are a better choice than the KX-TDA phone system.

1) The Panasonic KX TDE Phone System has a built in CTI Link Port , whereas the TDA Systems require a separate card for that which takes up a slot in your cabinet.   The CTI Link Port is a LAN port on your system.

This port will allow you to connect your phone system to your LAN, so that a system administrator can login from anywhere on the LAN and make programming changes. This will also allow you to assign your system an IP address so that you can remotely program your phone system over the WAN, rather than through an analog modem card.   It also allows you to connect your system to your LAN for CTI (computer telephony integration) features and functions.

2) The TDE Phone System supports Voice over IP integration through a DSP Module and Virtual Cabinets. This card does not take a slot in the cabinet, instead it clips on to the processor. It is compatible with SIP Trunks, IP Gateway Trunks, IP Extensions and SIP Extensions.

The Panasonic TDA systems are only compatible with the 16 port IP Extension cards, or the VoIP Gateway cards for IP applications. The 16 port IP extension cards are for proprietary IP Extensions only and they are very expensive. The VoIP Gateway Cards are only for connecting multiple sites and do not allow you to integrate SIP trunks.
The DSP Modules (KX-TDE0110, KX-TDE0111) are much less expensive. The KX-TDE0110 is a 16 channel card and comes with the ability to have 4 IP Trunks (Gateway Trunks or SIP Trunks) and 8 IP Extensions to start. While the KX-TDE0111 is a 64 channel card and has 16 IP Trunks and 32 IP Extensions. Both are expandable up to 32 SIP Trunks, 32 IP Gateway Trunks and 128 IP or SIP Extensions.

A big advantage of the TDE over the TDA phone system is the support SIP Trunks and SIP Extensions. SIP Extensions can be used for X-Lite Softphone and Polycom IP Phones (SoundPoint and the IP SoundStation) or Aastra IP Phones. Using a DSP card instead a card in a slot cabinet allow you to set up a virtual cabinet. You will see this cabinet in system programming, but there is no physical cabinet on the wall.  A virtual cabinet requires no power and no cabinet space in the phone closet.

3) The TDE Systems support the new IP DECT Cell Stations and the new NT400 Color Touch Screen Phone.
The IP DECT Cell Station is a cell station that can be used at a remote site for wireless phone integration as an IP extension. You may still use the same DECT wireless phone such as the KX-TD7685, KX-TD7695, and KX-TD7696 phones. This cell station comes in an 8 channel unit only (KX-NCP0158).
The NT400 Phone is a color touch screen IP phone. It has a screen that allow you to organize contacts and dial them with the touch of a button on your screen. It also interfaces with Panasonic IP cameras so you can view them from your screen. Plus much much more.

4) The new TDE Systems now support Communications Assistant which is a CTI software that does not require a separate PC. Communications Assistant Express is now free to all users on the new software release of TDE. The TDA supports Phone Assistant, which requires a separate PC. Communications Assistant will allow you to click to dial contacts, instant message other users, maintain your call log, set presence, receive your voicemails in your email, and has an option for visual voicemail.

5) Panasonic KX-TDE Phone System will grow larger because they support more IP Phones than KX-TDA. You can also have more lines with the addition of SIP trunks and IP Gateway trunks through the virtual cabinet.

Panasonic Wireless SIP DECT Phone Compatible with NCP and TDE Systems

Panasonic has released a series of wireless phones that are SIP standard. The models are the Panasonic KX-TGP500 and KX-TGP550 with the add on handsets KX-TPA50.

We have previously discussed the features and benefits of these phones. We have now test and discovered that these model phones are compatible with the Panasonic KX-NCP500, KX-NCP1000, KX-TDE100, KX-TDE200 and KX-TDE600 Phone Systems.

The Panasonic IP Phone Systems require the installation DSP Module, either the 16 channel KX-TDE0110 or 64 Channel KX-TDE0111, with SIP extension licenses activated in the system. The 4 channel DSP module (KX-NCP1104) and the KX-TDA50G IP Phone System are not compatible with SIP Extensions and therefore you cannot use the KX-TGP Phones on either. The amount SIP extensions that you may install are dependent upon which Panasonic Phone System you are using. The Panasonic NCP500 Phone System can have up to 32 SIP extensions and the NCP1000 can have up to 64 SIP Extensions. While any of the TDE Telephone Systems can have up to 128 SIP Extensions.

SIP Extension licenses can be used for the KX-TGP Models of phones as well as many other types of SIP Phones, such as X-Lite softphone, Aastra or Polycom SIP Telephones, or Polycom Soundstation IP conference phones.

Discontinued Panasonic Cards

A little known fact is that Panasonic is discontinuing two very important cards for the Panasonic KX TDE Telephone Systems and KX TDA Phone Systems.
This has not been formally announced; however, you cannot order these cards from distribution any longer.

The KX-TDA0171 8 port Digital Extension Card otherwise known as the DLC8 Card, is now discontinued. This card supports the KX-DT300 Series Phones, the KX-T7600 Series Phones, and even the older digital phones such as the KX-T7400 Series and the KX-T7200 Series. The only option for configuring digital phones on a KX-TDA100/200/600 or the KX-TDE100/200/600 Systems is the KX-TDA0172 16 Port Digital Extension Card.

The second card that is now discontinued for KX-TDA100/200/600 and KX-TDE100/200/600 Phone Systems is the KX-TDA0173 8 port Single Line Extension Cards also known as the SLC8. This card supports single line devices such as fax machines, credit card machines, audio conference phones, single line corded and cordless phones, hotel/motel phones, etc. The next option would be to use the KX-TDA0174 16 port Single Line Extension Card otherwise known as the SLC16 Card. Another option for adding single line devices is to use the XDP feature and connect a single line device to the back of a digital phone. This SLT can be the same extension or its own extension. You may also split a digital extension into two cable runs, one being a digital telephone and one being a single line device at no additional charge. This is a unique feature of the Panasonic telephone system.

Panasonic Unified PC Maintenance Console compatible with Linux Wine 1.2

We have recently learned that Panasonic Unified PC Maintenance Console is compatible with the latest release of Linux software. It must be release 1.2 in order to be compatible.

In addition the PC Maintenance Console and the KX-TVA programming software are now compatible with Windows 7 32 Bit Software. All versions of software are also compatible with Windows XP, but it is not compatible with Windows Vista. There is no plan to upgrade the software for use with Windows Vista.

So it is recommended that if you are planning to download the programming software, you must keep a laptop with Windows XP, or the better choice is to upgrade to Windows 7 or to Linux for future upgrades and use.

Why do you have to “Open” Panasonic telephone systems?

You may have heard that the Panasonic Digital and IP Telephone systems have to be opened to work. This means that your phone system can not be used or programmed until it is registered with Panasonic.

The procedure to OPEN (unlock) begins with signing into the Panasonic Phone System using the Unified PC Maintenance Programming Software. This is a downloadable file on the BTS Dealer website.

Once you sign in there will be a 12 digit ROM number displayed across the screen. This is the number that has to be registered by an Authorized Dealer on the Panasonic BTS dealer web site. You must go to www.btsdealer.com, click on Technical Support, then click on hardware and software registration.

You must have your dealer ID number and your tech ID number. The technician who is registering the system must be certified on that system in order to register it. Your tech ID number identifies your certifications and is the authorization code that allows you to complete the registration.

After you have signed in, you will enter the 12 digit ROM number to register the system. After it is registered, a file matching the 12 digit ROM number must be downloaded to the Panasonic Telephone System. You can now program and use the telephone system.

This is a requirement of Panasonic so only qualified technicians can work on the KX-TDA 50G/100/200/600, KX-TDE 100/200/600 and KX-NCP 500/1000 phone systems.

Any company that is an authorized dealer of Panasonic can register your phone system. Beware of companies who are not authorized or of buying systems off of eBay or other websites. Make sure your seller is authorized, otherwise you may not be able to register your system and it will not be able to operate.

Panasonic Announces the Release of SIP DECT 6.0 Wireless Systems

Panasonic KX-TGP 500/550 SIP DECT 6.0 Wireless Phone Systems

Panasonic has released two new models of wireless phones that utilize SIP technology and DECT 6.0 or 1.9 GHz wireless frequency, the TGP500 and TGP550.
These units may be used behind your Asterix based PBX System or with SIP Trunks. You may also use these phones as a mini phone system.

The TGP500 is a DECT 6.0 Cordless only system with one base station and up to 6 wireless handsets.

The TGP550 has one corded handset base station and 1 wireless handset with the ability to add up to 5 additional wireless DECT handsets.

These units are modeled after the Panasonic Consumer Phones so that it will be simple for most users to feel comfortable using them.

The TPA50 wireless handset can be added to the TGP500 or TGP550 when additional handsets are required. The handsets have up to 1000 feet of range from the base phone or base station.

Since it is a SIP only system it can not connect to regular analog lines/extensions. It can have up to 8 different SIP Registrations/Connections, or it can support up to 8 telephone numbers. Each of the systems can handle up to 3 simultaneous conversations to outside parties. Each of the handsets can call one another using the intercom feature, and that will not take away from the amount of simultaneous conversations.

All of the phones have large white backlit LCDs. Each phone has a full duplex speakerphone and a 2.5mm headset jack for direct connect headsets.

You may access features such as redial, do not disturb, local 3 way conference, call transfer, call hold, call waiting, call forwarding, etc. You can also set up distinctive ringing so that you can assign a different ring tone for internal calls versus external calls, or set up a different ring tone for different companies sharing the same office, etc. The phones also have a message waiting indicator when used with a phone company or PBX based voicemail system. The TGP550 corded base phone also has access to Busy Lamp Fields (BLF) or Direct Station Selection (DSS) buttons so it may be used for an attendant console.

For even larger environments you can connect a TGP550 corded phone with a TGP500 base unit for a total of 12 wireless phones and 1 corded phone. The main number can appear on 4 handsets and each user may have their own DID number.

Wireless Frequencies- What are the differences? How to Choose which Frequency is best for your Customer

900 MHz- Cordless models began using this frequency in 1990. Rarely used as a frequency on system cordless or wireless phones now. You may find some models out there with this frequency still, but it is usually a refurbished unit. These devices are available in 3 different models- Analog, Digital, and Digital Spread Spectrum. Analog and Digital models run the risk of eavesdropping. Another issue is that you may find that you have a signal fade or a brief silence if you get too far from the base unit. Digital Spread Spectrum varies its frequency so that there is less of a chance of signal fade. The range of the phone or device from the base unit varies depending upon the model.

2.4 GHz- Cordless and Wireless devices began using this frequency in 1998. These phones or devices will get a further range from the base unit than 900 MHz. Typically they have a range of about 100 ft from the base unit. This is one of the most common frequencies used in the United States. One of the main issues is that 900 MHz and 2.4 GHz are now also used for baby monitors, microwave ovens, Bluetooth devices, and wireless LAN’s. These devices will interfere with the quality of your conversation on your cordless device if they are used in the same environment. The 2.4 GHz Wireless phones with cell stations that Panasonic previously offered have now been discontinued. The 2.4 GHz KX-TD7896 Cordless Phone is still being sold by Panasonic. It is compatible with any Panasonic Telephone System.

5.8 GHz- Cordless and Wireless devices began using this frequency in 2003. You will mainly see this type of frequency used for residential cordless phones because it will not interfere with other devices in your home. Similarly to 2.4 GHz, they have a range of about 100 ft from the base unit. You may still find some residential Panasonic cordless models that use this frequency.

1.9 GHz- Panasonic now offers DECT 6.0 or 1.9 GHz Wireless Phones in both a Business Telephone model and a Residential Phone model. Originally used and developed as a European frequency until very recently, 1.9 GHz is also called DECT 6.0. Manufacturers’ began using this frequency in 2005. This frequency is becoming much more popular because it will not interfere with wireless networks, baby monitors, Bluetooth devices, and microwave ovens as seen in some of the older models of cordless and wireless devices. DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Communication) can be used in a variety of ways. One major use is to allow multiple handsets to register to one base station. On certain systems this allows the wireless phones to work together as a mini-system. Calls can be transferred from wireless phone to wireless phone, and you may intercom or conference call between phones. Another major use is the ability to have handsets register to multiple cell stations or base station units to greatly increase the range of each handset. Panasonic Business DECT Phones work in this manner. You will register a handset or handset to a cell station or multiple cell stations. The phones will hop from cell station to cell station depending on what will be the best quality conversation. The 1.9 GHz frequency (DECT 6.0) allows a range of about 150 ft from the base unit or cell station. You may place these cell stations in various areas of the office so that coverage can overlap and there will not be any signal fading issues as was seen in earlier versions of wireless phones. Another benefit is the extended talk time of the phone before the phone must be re-charged. The DECT Cell Stations come in 8 port or 2 port models. For every two ports of cell station connection, it only requires one digital station port. The Wireless handsets do not require a digital extension or a cable run. DECT Phones are also VoIP capable now. So they can interface with a VoIP Hybrid PBX or even as a SIP Phone on a hosted PBX platform. The DECT Cell Stations are now available in an 8 port IP model. So you can put your cell station at a remote site and use any of the DECT Wireless handsets. Panasonic has also announced the release of SIP DECT Phones. The TGP550 and TGP500 models with the TPA50 add on wireless handset. They are compatible with any system that will accept a SIP Extension including Asterix based platforms. It is also compatible with G.722, G.711, and G.729 Codecs.

On March 8, 2010 Panasonic announced their latest release in software of the TDE and NCP Product Lines. There are several new features that are now available as well as several new exciting products.

Panasonic Announces New Release of TDE and NCP System Software- How to Perform a System Upgrade

On March 8, 2010 Panasonic announced several new products will be released as well as new software release of TDE100,200,600 and NCP500,1000. The new software releases of TDE and NCP are now available on BTSdealer.com and are accessible to those who have a username and password.

You must be onsite to upgrade a customer's Panasonic Telephone System. To download the latest release of software simply go to the software section on BTSdealer and download the file to your laptop. Please be sure you have downloaded the latest release of the Unified PC Programming Tool from BTS Dealer as well. The programming tool is now compatible with Microsoft XP and Windows 7 (32 bit software).

Once you are onsite you must follow these steps:
1) Turn off phone system
2) Remove SD Card from system and put in SD reader on your laptop
3) Over write existing system software with new software. The old version will be in a folder labelled "Private". Copy and Paste the new software over the existing software. It will say this file already exists and asks you if you would like to over write exsiting software, click yes.
4) Once the upgrade is complete put your SD card back in your Panasonic Phone System and turn the system back on.

Panasonic is one of the only manufacturer's that offers free upgrades to the latest release software to their customers.
Your customers will definitely feel more comfortable with their investment knowing that they can always upgrade to the latest technology with Panasonic.

Panasonic New Released Software and Upgrade to Unified PC Console

As some of you have heard there are some compatibility issues with Panasonic’s Unified PC Console or the Programming Software and Windows 7 and Vista.

This is an industry issue and not just limited to Panasonic. I spoke with one of their sales engineers yesterday and he gave me some updates on what will be happening within the next month.
At the moment Windows 7 (32 bit software) is compatible with the programming software for the TDA, TDE, and NCP system with some exceptions.
The TDA50/100/200 versions 3,4,5 is compatible. We are currently using version 5. If they have version 1 or 2 it does not work but we can easily upgrade them to version 5.
Windows 7 (64 bit software) is not compatible at all. The issue is the USB driver does not work and they have not yet tested the Ethernet connection.
The TDA600, TDE100/200/600 and NCP 500/1000 all work with Windows 7 (32 bit software). There is no solution for Windows Vista at the moment.
On Windows 7 there is an XP mode that the customer can activate. Panasonic recommends that they use this when activating the programming software.
They are currently working on the issue of the Windows 7 32 bit software being compatible with the TVA voicemail.
Right now it is not compatible, but they should have a solution soon, most likely by the end of February.
Once they fix that they will start working on the systems working with Windows 7 (64 bit software) and after that, fix the same issue with the voicemails.
They do not know if they will ever fix the issue with Vista. It is a lower priority at the moment.
They recommend to most installers that they keep a laptop with XP software on it for programming.

At the end of January they will be coming out with a new software release on the TDE (version 3) and the NCP (version 2).
The new systems will be available to Panasonic USA then and they will be finding out the new features then.
They will announce the new system and features by mid-February. So at this point I am not sure of all of the new features and selling points.
They will be moving forward with Communications Assistant on the TDE systems, rather than Phone Assistant.
This is a CTI application that supports click to dial from outlook. Right now the CA is only available on NCP and the NCP comes with 5 CA basic licenses built in.
It does not require a separate computer, unlike the old version of Phone Assistant that does require a dedicated PC.
You buy this on a per user license. The TDE will come with Basic or “Express” licenses built in. As of right now I do not know how many.
Call Assistant can also be a networked version. So the client would buy a Supervisor license and in the network version they would be able to login and see the calls being made on the users at remote sites.
The new version TDE will have a larger configuration of IP Phones. You will be able to add up to 128 IP Phones with G711 CODEC.
Keep in mind if you buy a 16 channel DSP card then with G711 CODEC you can have up to 16 simultaneous conversations and with the 64 Channel you can have 64 conversations.
Also, the TDE100 & 200 can use all 6 slots in the main cabinet for expansion cards. The latest version allow you to use the slot that was used just for the Options Card (OPB3) as an expansion slot as well.
All upgrades to the new software come free from Panasonic.

Upgrading a Panasonic Phone System

We came across a customer recently that has a Panasonic Phone System and wanted to upgrade to a newer system. He was very happy with his Panasonic Telephone and wanted to be able to keep some of the equipment if possible and not have to buy phones immediately.

He has the Analog KX-T7700 series phones and wanted to be able to keep them. He also wanted to take advantage of Voice over IP technology by connecting remote phones.

He currently is using SIP Trunks that are converted to analog lines with Grandstream Gateway boxes. He is also using a T-1 circuit for his internet connection.

We upgraded him to a Panasonic KX-TDE100 system with a 16 Channel DSP Card, Hybrid Extension Cards to connect his kx phones. The Hybrid Extension Cards may be used for the KX-T7700 series phones or the DT300 series and KX-T7600 series phones so that in the future if a telephone breaks, he can replace it with a newer model. He will now be able to remove the Grandstream boxes and connect to the system direct through the SIP Trunk licenses on the DSP Card. This will be a much cleaner way to connect the lines into the system.

His son is very tech savvy and programs his KX-TA824 system. We pre-programmed the system for him with a basic configuration and shipped it out to him.

We are providing his son with online training so he will be able to maintain his system going forward. One of the benefits of the TDE100 system is that it has a CTI link card built into the processor.

Now the phone system can be programmed directly through the LAN and on his son’s desktop instead of having to program through a telephone or hooking a laptop up to the system. Programming changes will be much easier to complete now.

The Panasonic Phone System TDE 100 also has it’s own IP address, so his son can log on to the system from anywhere he is and make programming changes.

He will also be able to send a few remote phones to California for his new start up office. He also plans on having a phone at home for himself as well as a few other employees.

We spoke to his SIP Line Provider to make sure we are connecting into the phone system properly. He will now be able to receive caller ID information and the phone lines will roll over so if someone is on the first line it will ring the second line. At the moment if they call the first line and someone is on the phone, it will ring as busy. He needed to make sure that he has a VPN router and a Static IP address dedicated to voice at his main location as well as a small VPN router at his remote sites so that the remote voip phones can connect to the system. He is also going to add Music on Hold to his Panasonic PBX. At some point he may also want to add mobile phones like the DECT 6.0 Wireless Phones. These phones look like cell phones and use newer technology for the maximum amount of wireless coverage in your office.

Our customer is very happy with his new selection and plans on further expanding his system in the future.

Some of the Improvements Include:

• Ability to display your DBA in locator search results instead of the company name you registered on BTS dealer website

• Ability to display a different phone number such as your sales number or toll free number, instead of the main office number which you put in your dealer profile

• Ability to display your company's web site address

These features are optional and you can use one or all of them depending on your company preference.

A few reminders from Panasonic:

• Panasonic reminds you to log in to the BTS dealer website and update your profile as often as possible to have your best information displayed to potential endusers

• Only the principal/owner can make changes to your account profile. Sub-users do not have the ability to change these fields. If you are unable to edit your profile from the main menu then you are not the principal on the account. If you are unsure of who the principal is on your account please contact your ASM or Bruce Beaudette in sales and they will be able to assist you.

• Please be sure to populate the Sale Lead Email Field. This is the only way the CONTACT ME button will only show on your company listing in the search results. The principal on your account will be able to see and populate this. Panasonic cannot put your sales lead email address in your profile for you since you must read and accept the terms and conditions associated with this feature. This information is displayed next to the Sales Lead Email field. Populating this field will allow your company to receive leads from endusers looking to have Panasonic Systems installed or maintained.

• It is important to have the correct data in your company name field. Any erroneous or extra characters will make it more difficult for Panasonic to match up benefits such as reward points to your account.

Panasonic IP Phone Compatibility Chart

Phones with the Panasonic NT300 Series Phones. For customers with the discontinued phones it can be a bit confusing as to which model to choose when they want to add new phones or replace defective phones.

The Panasonic NT265 and NT136 Phones will only work if your system has an 16 Port IP Extension Card (KX-TDA0470), which is typically used on a KX-TDA100/200/600 System. If you are buying or have a newer phone Panasonic Phone System, such as the KX-TDE100/200/600 or the NCP500/1000 Systems then you will most likely be using one of the Panasonic DSP Modules for Voice over IP. The NT265 and the NT136 IP Phones are not compatible with this module.

If you are upgrading your existing KXTDA system to a KXTDE or an NCP system, you can still use your existing NT265 and NT136 phones with your 16 port IP Extension Card. You will just need to make sure you have enough ports on the card to support the amount of IP Phones you need. You can also add a DSP module and use the NT300 series phones.
